The Crook’d Staff is a captivating adventure that begins in British-occupied Ireland in 1823. Following the lives of Evan Ryan and his sister, Ana, and the compelling circumstances surrounding their immigration to America, the reader is brought into the wild fur trade days of early St. Paul, MN. Evan then steps into the lives of the Lakota and Cheyenne during the zenith of their culture in the 1830s and ‘40s. With these Native Americans, Evan again shares the cross-cultural values of honor, commitment, responsibility, and love. The legacy of the crook’d staff then passes to succeeding generations as the novel, but not the family’s story, ends in 1891. The Crook'd Staff Book Cover

...what readers are saying……...

“…a well-paced story that inspires a recognition of the importance of family. I wrote down the words that constitute the main theme of the book, and now I say them to my two sons. ”
Kathy Leege, Wife and Mom, Eau Claire, WI

“This story cleverly weaves the Irish experience with that of Native Americans, something that has rarely been attempted. In doing so, it celebrates the common values revered by both cultures; respect, honorable actions, responsibility to one’s community, connectedness to family, and love. This story succeeds in the dual goal of providing thought-provoking topics via an entertaining and educational story line. Don’t hesitate to read this little book.”
Rick Koziel, Director, Beaver Creek Reserve, Outdoor Education Facility, Eau Claire County, WI

“The connections to many unknown bits of American history and Plains Indian culture made this a fascinating story. High school students will love it and so will their teachers. It is a teaching story and a great read.”
Judy Dekan, Principal, Augusta Public Schools, WI

“I loved this book, and I learned some American History, too. I usually only read sci-fi, but this story kept me interested. I’m recommending it to my friends.”
Mimi Lea, High School Student, Chippewa Falls, WI

“…a story that reminded me of how much we have been given by our ancestors, no matter where they originated. Some of my French-Canadian forbearers came from the places portrayed in this story. It made me proud.”
Mark Gagnon, Ironworker, Local 512, St. Paul, MN

“The Crook’d Staff is a creative way to present some American history and cultural anthropology to a broad range of readers. It succeeds in doing that and more. The plot and characters cause the reader to reflect on some unknown pieces of our country’s past, and the suggested bibliography is evidence of the author’s extensive familiarity with the topics. This book ranks with the best stories in this genre and a sequel needs to be written.”
Eddie Fox, Music and Literary Reviewer, Madison, WI

“This book has great characters. They were believable and so was the plot. I liked the way the story moved along. There was a lot of history I didn’t know. I wish this was the kind of book we were required to read at school more often.”
Brian Wells, High School Student, Eau Claire, WI

“…so many twists and turns that I gave up trying to figure out where this story was going to go next. I read a lot and this is a must-read little book that was thoroughly enjoyable.”

Lou Recine, Software Tester, Eau Claire, WI
